What a crazy, insane week!
Our week one challenge for the Stream On competition was Best Foot Forward. We were supposed to show our potential for stream growth and health and it is all measured in our stream stats.
I took this challenge and interpreted it this way:
Growth. How can I grow my channel even more? Growth on my channel this past year has been slow at best. It's been stagnant, really. I did my best with everything, but month after month, I struggled bringing in new people. I tried streaming days, nights, evenings and etc and it was incredibly hard to grow the channel. I did find this quite challenging for me as I felt like I do already work at this every single day and my results have not been so great. So we did several new things. The silly thing about these new things that we did on stream were that they were already pre scheduled before the challenge was even announced!
One of the three new things we did was we had an educational stream with a guest. We talked about leather, type of leather, places to buy it and what the difference in ounces were. And then we built a knife sheath! Jason from Diomedes Industries was GREAT to have on stream! Our dynamic together was really smooth! It is very difficult to find someone to have on stream with me, who doesn't interrupt my flow. We both felt that we worked so well together that we are going to do this every Friday from 8am PST to 12:30pm PST. These educational streams are centered more around Q&A and education and less about fun and entertainment, although we do have fun and that can be entertaining, it is more focused on talk and less on the crazy stuff that can happen in a normal Suchi stream. You can find our educational stream here and here. There are two videos because my stream briefly went offline during the stream.
The second new thing that we did was a gaming stream! Let me explain to you why we did a gaming stream. My channel started off as a gaming stream. I switched it to all creative and leather working a while ago because Twitch started the creative section and I LOVE creative! I just enjoyed working with leather so much and I wanted to stream just that. But the people who used to come into my gaming streams missed their gaming Suchi. They often come into chat and ask if I will ever game again and my answer was always "probably not"... but when it kept happening, I changed my answer to "If we ever unlock an emote slot, I will"... guess what happened this week!? For the first time EVER in channel history, we gained enough subscribers to unlock not just ONE emote slot but TWO!!!! Of the two years that I've been partnered with Twitch, we finally unlocked TWO emote slots!!! We made channel history, guys! So, I scheduled a bonus gaming stream on Monday and that went really well! I was told that I am a "natural FPS streamer"... I warned you all. I said I get potty mouth and I get crazy and rage on the game. That's just what happens. I can't help myself. Well, apparently, that's fun to watch. LoL. We really did have fun and we made new friends!
Because we unlocked ANOTHER emote slot, I scheduled a Bob Ross stream. Bob Ross does leather is what we titled it. This was supposed to be during our Tuesday stream. I was prepared and ready to make this a great stream! I put on my Bob Ross beard. I fixed my afro and started streaming! Everything was going very well! We were all enjoying the Bob Ross dancing and we were joking around a lot! And then my internet just decided to take a poop. I tried several times during the stream to get the internet working again, but it was not working well and eventually I had to cut stream short. I was super duper bummed by this and felt like I lost an opportunity to push for the Stream On Challenge. It was my final big push and I knew my Bob Ross streams were a huge success and the numbers were also showing that it was succeeding. I cannot control what happened with the internet. And I felt super duper defeated. So I went to my room and I really just wanted to cry. And my phone started dinging. It was my Twitch Moderator team. They cheered me up so much. I started feeling better. I went from nearly tears to laughing hysterically. How do they do that? And then I got another encouraging message from one of the Stream On participants. This person encouraged me to try again. "I don't want to beat you because of WiFi VOODOO. I want to beat you for real... I'm digging your streams so I don't want you out of this (yet)" Thanks so much for that message! So I gave it another shot! Bob Ross does Leather stayed online for about 3 hours before internet pooped again, but it was a good 3 hours. The ISP came out the next day and fixed the internet (I hope).
Another thing that I did this week was I went to the Seattle Online Broadcasters meet up! That was super fun! I've been going to that since they started the first few. Unfortunately, I don't get to go every week, but I did get to go last weekend! All four of us from the Seattle area got to address the attendees and talk a little bit about what we do in our streams.
It was fun! I got to meet my fellow Stream On Participants ThaButtress and FerociouslySteph. BanzaiBaby and I already knew each other, but it was awesome seeing her again. She's just a bubbly bundle of personality and I love that about her! ThaButtress has a winning personality. She is just the right amount of beautiful, nerd, shy and confident. And FerociouslySteph is really hard not to love right away! I only wish we got to spend more time together.
I really do not know how I will do in the challenge, but today is the day that we get to find out! I am so incredibly grateful for the extra streams we had this week as without them, this challenge would have surely failed! When I looked at my stats, I am surprised at how much the stream has grown. How many subs and new followers we have gained and how incredibly humble I am at the support that is currently going out for us from not just my community but also from the other Stream On participants! I do not know what today will bring, but I do feel like I did my very best in this challenge and no matter what happens in today's show, I feel like I'm going to keep at it! I'm enjoying the stream and changing things up and doing new stuff in it. Even if I am eliminated, I will still continue to work to grow my stream and challenge myself and reach out to other broadcasters and make myself a part of this larger community!
For my friends out there who are unfamiliar with Twitch, I made a video for you on how you can be a part of this journey and maybe even save me from elimination!!! Watch this!
